Nerding Out Over The Sphere

What is the Sphere you ask? The Sphere is one of the newest destination spots on the Las Vegas Strip.

It is designed so the inside and the outside display high-resolution graphics. But there is so much more the technology is mind-boggling.

The Las Vegas Sphere has 4,000TB SSD storage delivering 400GB/s throughput. All that is controlled by Hitachi Vantara’s software streams ultra-high-resolution content to both interior and exterior displays. The interior display includes a 16K interior LED screen and an ultra-high resolution 18K camera system (that’s 160,000 square-foot interior LED display and 580,000 square-foot Exosphere).

Hitachi Content Software for File, which Hitachi describes as a “high-performance, software-defined, distributed parallel filesystem storage solution” is an integral part of things. It consists of 27 nodes, with 4PB of flash storage for playback within Sphere.

The system streams content in real-time to 7thSense media servers, each streaming 4K video at 60 frames per second.

Not only is the video cutting-edge, not cutting-edge, more like bleeding-edge, but the audio is no slouch either, with over 167,000 individually amplified loudspeaker drivers.

The Sphere opened in late 2023 (September 29th), as the $2.3 billion (with a “B”), 17,600-seat Sphere at the Venetian Resort, the Las Vegas venue dedicated to immersive entertainment and live events.
