Google Maps Timeline

Did you know that your Android devices might be tracking your every move? This isn’t one of those doom and gloom posts, that Big Brother is spying on you. In this case, Google has a feature that if you turn on your GPS, they can track where you are and put that on a map for you at the end of the month.

Google defines it as Google Maps Timeline is a personal map that helps you remember routes and trips you’ve taken and places you’ve been based on your Location History. You can edit your Timeline at any time and delete your Location History in Timeline.

I’m not entirely sure what use this is, but hey, it exists and Google knows more than we do, so…..

So let’s look at my timeline for last month, May 2023. It shows that I have been all over Fredericksburg, a trip to King George and a trip or two to Charlottesville. If I click on one of the red dots, it will expand and show me the entire trip for that day. It shows that I went to Firestone Complete Auto Care, Spotsylvania Towne Centre, and Wegmans for starts. The detailed route looks a little odd on a map but is accurate for that day. I had to pick up my son from Firestone and then he and I made a few stops along the way, including his house, a friend’s house, my house, the movie theater for Father-Son time and to watch John Wick 4, to Total Wine and More as well as Wegmans as he was looking for a special wine, back to get his car and all that fun stuff. It was a fun day actually, but I love spending time with my kids. If I look at the details of the trip it will show you the distance and time it took for each leg of the trip.

So if you are trying to keep track of your mileage, this works well. if you have a crazy schedule, this might help you as well. But for the average person, It really isn’t helpful.

To turn it off, you need to log onto your Google account under My Google Activity and then turn off Location History. However, if you use Google Assistant, it requires Location History to be turned on.

Enjoy tracking your every detail.
