Def Lappard - Diamond Star Halos

The long-awaited new release from Def Leppard (Diamond Star Halos) is due out this month (May 27), and we have two singles from it already and it sounds like it is going to kick ass. This is their 12th album and it sounds like they are going to be back on top again.

First, we have ‘Kick’ and which sounds like old-school 80’s Def Leppard to me, and it rocks, though the video itself is strange the song itself is strong and crunchy. Joe’s voice is strong at 62 years old. It sounds more like the Anthem rock songs that they released in the 90s, but certainly so much better than some of their newer stuff.

Sadly, for some reason, this song is getting poor reviews online and I don’t agree. So give it a listen and tell me what you think.

Then unexpectedly, they released this past week ‘Take What You Want’ and though the song has potential, I think they missed the mark on it compared to ‘Kick’.  The song opens like some 90’s Def Leppard, Joe’s vocals are soft, I think it personally needs to be mixed better, they are not really capitalizing on Joe’s. The guitars are screaming and Rick Allen is strong as usual on the drums. I think if they remixed it to showcase Joe more, then it will rock.

Now don’t get me wrong, I think if they brought Joe’s voice to the front, it will really kick ass. It seems that they were cranking on the opening riffs and then when Joe started to sing, they turned it all down a few notches. Def Leppard hit the mark, but their mixing crew failed miserably on this song.

What do you think?

I think that this new album is going to really kick some ass and bring Def Leppard back to the top again and make them a household name like they were in the 80s and 90s. It isn’t Pyromania, Hysteria, or High ‘n’ Dry, but we will likely never hear that sound again, after all, that was 40 years ago. OMG, I’m getting old, ugh

They hit the road this summer (June 16th in Atlanta) for a Stadium Tour with Motley Crue, Poison, and Joan Jett, and the Blackhearts. That sounds like it would be an awesome 80s-90s old-school concert.
