Computer Security Day
Sadly there is only one Computer Security Day each year as I know many people seem to never learn anything about Computer Security. Cyber security affects everything from where we bank and how we spend our money to who we elect to public office. It isn’t a joke, the worst email virus in history caused $38.5 billion in damage.
2013 – Yahoo! (Search engine)
Yahoo! had one of the biggest network attacks in history. In the end, Yahoo! had 3 billion (yes that is with a “B“) accounts compromised. Thieves made off with the names, birth dates, phone numbers, and passwords of Yahoo! users. The data was encrypted, but the encryption was weak and very easy to crack. They also were able to gain access to the security questions (and answers) and a backup email address that would have been used to reset lost passwords.
In the end, users received around $61, as part of the class action lawsuit. Here is my check from the lawsuit.

Welcome to the Average Joe Weekly blog. This is basically my place on the web where I can help spread some of the knowledge that I have accumulated over the years. I served 10+ years in the Marine Corps on Active Duty, but that was some 25 years ago.
