Maya Loves Her Hay

Maya, who is a mix of draft and quarter horse just loves her horse. Being part draft, she is super lazy and when she walks up to you, she has this big swing both in the front and her back. This horse loves to pull her big old fat ass up to the hay bag and just eat. She is so lazy that she normally chews a hole into each bag, so it is easier for her to get the hay out. The funny thing is the bags are designed to slow down eating hay.

Fun fact about Maya, she has a disease known as Wobbler syndrome. A “Wobbler” is a horse with a damaged spinal cord. The most obvious clinical sign is an abnormal gait characterized by wobbling, or a horse that looks like he has had a fair amount of tranquilizers. Severe damage can actually result in a horse that may fall and have difficulty getting up. (source – American Association of Equine Practitioners) This is why we adopted Maya as she would have been left to live her life at a horse rescue. With our family, she has lived a long happy life. My family actually make a joke about Maya and I walking side-by-side, we are like two bumper cars, bouncing off each other, it is rather comical.

Here is a photo of Maya wearing a fly mask and eating hay.

A Note To All The Haters: Before you start making nasty comments, there is always hay available to the horses via the hay bags. We use the bags to slow down their consumption which is to help control their weight. When we used to feed them with a round bale, Maya specifically would seldom leave the bale and stay there all day and eat. The family joke was she would pull her La-Z-Boy up to the hay rounder and stay there all day.
