Combating Night-Time Dry Mouth

One of the side effects that I really didn’t know that I was having was dry mouth. That is until my dentist asked me about it. I was sitting in the chair and she asked me if I have problems with dry mouth. I said I think I might at night, why. She said that my mouth is showing signs. She said that when you have dry mouth, you are low on saliva and that makes it easy for harmful bacteria to proliferate, leaving your mouth at risk for cavities and tooth loss.

I told her about me taking Gabapentin and what can I do about it. She recommended that I try XyliMelts at night and they actually help greatly.

Basically, Xylimelts are a slow dissolving sugar-free breath mint that have a small gum based adhesive side that allows you to stick them to your gums and then go to sleep. This allows your mouth to stimulate saliva production while you sleep. Since swallowing is an automatic response you don’t have to worry about drooling all night. For me, I find that minus the taste (they come in mint, slightly sweet and cinnamon flavors) I don’t even notice they are there after a few minutes of adhering to my gums.

When I wake up in the morning, it is totally dissolved and all is well. I will have to see what my dentist has to say at my next check-up.

Why have I never heard of these before? I will get some today and try them tonight. Do they actually stick where you put them and do they work?

    1. Yes they actually do work, but they last about 4 hours, and one of my issues is sleeping through the entire night, so when I get up through out the night I have to deal with the dry mouth again. I wish they would last longer. They actually do stick very well, so you will have to play around on where you stick it to make it comfortable. The manufacture recommends that you put two in, one on each side of your mouth. I use one as I didn’t find much benefit from having two in at the same time. I hope they work for you too.

They were impossible to located locally, so I had to bust out the Amazon Prime and order them online. But they actually do work. They remind me of the old certs candy. Thank you for pointing them out to me.
