What In The World Is Doxing?

Doxing is slang for “dropping dox”, and comes from a spelling alteration of the abbreviation “docs” (for “documents”) and refers to “compiling and releasing a dossier of personal information on someone”. According to Wired writer Mat Honan, was “an old-school revenge tactic that emerged from hacker culture in the 1990s”. Hackers operating outside the law in that era used the breach of an opponent’s anonymity as a means to expose opponents to harassment or legal repercussions. (source)

In our case, we aren’t going to do anything illegal, we aren’t searching for anyone other than ourselves. Part of our removing ourselves from online is to Dox yourself.

Now that you have removed the most obvious data points about yourself, it is time to start to dig.

I recommend that whatever you do on Google, you perform the same search on Bing. They are NOT created equal and contain different websites and drastically different search and index algorithms. Google Search Operators and Tips/Tricks are here

  • First, look for your “First Last” – first without the quotes, then again with the quotes
  • Then “First MI Last” – again first without the quotes and then with the quotes

You will be surprised at what websites have you listed. What I normally would do, is use my custom template below, I search for everything I can to fill in the blanks. Act as if you don’t know yourself and don’t fill in anything you haven’t found online. The goal of the template below is to get you to think outside of the box. You may not always show up just by searching for your name. But again this all depends on how much you really want to disappear.

Based on the information that you have found doing the above searches, start to populate the Dox Template below

Once you have exhausted searching for your name, start searching for the information you populated in the Dox Template

Example: I found my address and phone number, so I started to search using those next.

Keep going until you have found everything you are looking for. Make sure that you are keeping a record of the URLs so you can go URL by URL and start the removal process.

Tips & Tricks

  • Don’t stop after the first 10 pages, keep searching until the end
  • Don’t get sidetracked and go down rabbit holes

Welcome to the Average Joe Weekly blog. This is basically my place on the web where I can help spread some of the knowledge that I have accumulated over the years. I served 10+ years in the Marine Corps on Active Duty, but that was some 25 years ago.
