Ever wonder what happens to your Facebook page after you die?
Well, the short answer is, nothing, nothing at all, that is right away.
Facebook will delete an account after a period of inactivity, but exactly how long that period is, remains a mystery. I can tell you that it is at least 1 year, as I have known people who have passed away and their profile is still visible.
If friends and/or family wish to turn your page into a memorial, then Facebook has a process for that.
You can read the entire help page here but I will cover the basic process. Basically, you have two options, Memorialized account or Delete the account.
To memorialize an account is basically a static page with the word Remembering next to their name, and depending on the privacy settings of the account, friends can share memories on the memorialized timeline.
A good Marine Corps friend of mine passed away in 2019 and his family had his page memorialized. You can see what that looks like below.
If you desire to set up someone as what Facebook calls a “Legacy Contact“, that person will be able to look after your account if it’s memorialized. To establish a legacy account person, Log into Facebook, and click on Settings > Settings & Privacy.
You will see a section titled Memorialization Settings, in that section, you would submit the name of the person you wish to manage your account in the event you die.
That person has no rights until after your account has been memorialized and that doesn’t happen unless someone a family member or a close friend lets Facebook know that you have passed. The Memorialization Request form is here.
The other option is to have the page deleted. If you want your page deleted after you pass away, then again you have that option and you can set that up now. To have your account deleted if you pass away, Log into Facebook, and click on Settings > Settings & Privacy.
You will see a section titled Memorialization Settings, towards the bottom of that section, you can select ‘Request that your account be deleted after you pass away’
Now you know
