The first asthma treatment was the inhaled corticosteroids like Breo, and Symbicort (which I had a bad reaction to), and then they also tried Nasonex (which made my throat itch), so they tried Asmanex 220mcg inhaler that they were supplemented with Ipratrapium Bromide Nasal Spray and Mometasone Furoate 50 MCG Spray, after some monkeying around, we found a combination that ‘worked’ for me. Worked being a moving target really, but it was some progress, that was until I started to have heart palpitations and chest pressure, and a rapid heart rate, which eventually sent my happy ass to the Emergency Room, with a high BP of 150/90, rapid resting heart rate of 150bps, pulse Ox of 92. They, of course, heard the word heart and had me in the back in no time. After three rounds of Nitroglycerin to get my heart rate back to normal and morphine for the nitro headache, they wanted to admit me for tests.

They ran an echocardiogram, stress test, X-rays, CT, and of course, a heart monitor the whole time. Three days later, I was told once again that my ticker was rock solid and we determined that it was the chemical cocktail for asthma that was causing me issues. Though the combination of the asthma medications doesn’t have any major known interactions, they all have side effects listed for tachycardia and hypertension. I have a long history of having an odd reaction to some medications and well this is another one

Back to Dr. W one more time, when he had a brilliant idea. He remembered me talking about my neurological issues and said, that there is a small bundle of nerves in the airway that can cause coughing and some studies show that in patients with neurological issues, he called it cough hypersensitivity syndrome. He recommended and prescribed that taking Neurontin (a.k.a. Gabapentin) can help to calm them down and stop the coughing. Well, it actually worked, and it was also very effective in killing the pain in my hands, arms, feet, and legs. I was so happy to finally find something that is working and I was pretty much fully functional, with no major side effects. It was amazing to be pain-free, in fact, I actually missed the pain for a brief few seconds, it was so odd to not have pain after having it for so long.

That sounds scary, glad to see that it wasn’t a heart attack. I swear that the doctors do this on purpose to make more money.
