Leroy Jethro Gibbs' Rules

Leroy Jethro Gibbs is a fictitious character on the TV show NCIS (Naval Criminal Investigative Service). Mark Harmon plays special NCIS Agent Gibbs. Mark Harmon, plays a tough by-the-books NCIS agent who was a former active-duty, U.S. Marine. Gibbs has many rules that he lives by and I can relate to a fair amount of them. The problem with his rules is that we have seen a complete written list, so this list is compiled from all the episodes (many of the number repeat, and some are altogether missing)

1. Never let suspects sit together – I can understand this one, if my kids conspired to cause trouble, I never let them tell me what happened together, I would separate them so I can see if I get the same story.

1. Never screw (over) your partner – Of course, this is a no-brainer, but it happens all the time at work

2. Always wear gloves at a crime scene

3. Don’t believe what you’re told. Double-check.

3. Never be unreachable.

4. If you have a secret, the best thing is to keep it to yourself. The second best is to tell one other person if you must. There is no third best.

5. You don’t waste goods.

6. Never say you’re sorry. It’s a sign of weakness.

7. Always be specific when you lie.

8. Never take anything for granted.

9. Never go anywhere without a knife.

10. Never get personally involved in a case.

11. When the job is done, walk away.

12. Never date a coworker.

13. Never, ever involve lawyers.

14. Bend the line, don’t break it.

15. Always work as a team.

16. If someone thinks they have the upper hand, break it.

17.

18. It’s better to ask forgiveness than ask permission.

19.

20. Always look under

21.

22. Never, ever interrupt Gibbs in interrogation.

23. Never mess with Marine’s coffee if you want to live.

24.

25.

26.

27. There are two ways to follow someone.
1st way – they never notice you;
2nd way – they only notice you.

28. If you need help, ask!

29.

35. Always watch the watchers.

36. If it feels like you’re being played, you probably are.

37.

38. Your case, your lead.

39. There is no such thing as coincidence.

40. If it seems like someone’s out to get you, they are.

41.

42. Don’t ever accept an apology from someone that just sucker-punched you.

43.

44. First things first, hide the women and children

45. Clean up your messes.

46.

47.

48.

49.

50.

51. Sometimes – you’re wrong

52.

62. Leave room for someone exiting the elevator.

69. Never trust a woman who doesn’t trust her man.

70. Keep digging till you hit bottom

72. Always be open to new things.

73. Never meet your heroes.

91. When you decide to walk away, never look back.

99. Never tell Gibbs he’s been audited.

Unnumbered rules:
Never date a woman that eats more than you do
Don’t work the system when you can work the people
Don’t stop checking and rechecking evidence until you are satisfied
If you want to find something. You follow it.
Never second guess yourself in a relationship and in life
