Boy Scout Bridge I Made
My son joined Boy Scouts of America as a Tiger Cub Scout when he was in first grade. He remained in Scout up until he was 18 years old. I’m one of those all-in-or-nothing types of people, so I signed up for an adult position as well, which just happened to be as assistant Cubmaster and also an assistant Den leader. Mrs. Average usually joined as a committee member in some capacity.
I made sure that the boys had a great time and enjoyed the experience. When the boys bridge up from Cub Scouts to Boy Scouts, which is usually around 6th grade, there is usually this big ceremony put on by the Boy Scout Troop they are joining. One of the things I saw done was having the boys cross over a bridge from Cub Scout to Boy Scout, and on the Boy Scout side of the bridge, would be all the Boy Scouts from the troops that they will be bridging over to.
So when it came time for my son’s den to bridge over, I decided that I would create a bridge for them to bridge over.
I just happened to have a day off work, as I was having an EEG, where they glue these electrodes to your head and track your brain waves, so I took the day off, as there was no way in hell I was going to work like that.
I grabbed some pallets, rope, and paint and got busy and bingo, the boys had a bridge to cross over with. When they crossed over they got to sign their name and our boys were super excited to be the first boys to cross and sign the bridge. When we were done, we donated the bridge to the Cub Scout Pack so they could continue the tradition.
Sadly, they disbanded that same year and I’m sure that the bridge found its way to the dump somewhere, how sad.

Welcome to the Average Joe Weekly blog. This is basically my place on the web where I can help spread some of the knowledge that I have accumulated over the years. I served 10+ years in the Marine Corps on Active Duty, but that was some 25 years ago.
