Stranded Hiker
So let me get this straight-A hiker is exploring Mount Elbert, which just happens to be Colorado’s highest peak, they get lost and disoriented and can’t find their way back to civilization, yet they ignored phone calls to their cell phone because they were from an unknown number.
How can you be that ignorant, I mean we are talking life or death at this point and you are not going to answer the calls and text messages from the rescuers because you didn’t want to hear that your vehicle’s warranty is about to expire. Wow, I think if I was in that situation, I would answer those calls and beg them to help me, but I guess I’m not as self-centered as this person was.
Now the hiker claimed that they weren’t lost, but they were overdue to be off the mountain so someone was worried and called for help.
For those that don’t know, when you go out and hike or do something like this, you should always have an itinerary and leave a copy of that itinerary behind so someone knows where and when to look for you.
My son and I go hiking often and when we do, we leave a copy of our itinerary at home and a copy of the itinerary in the back of the covered bed of my truck. This way if we are late or missing, someone has a place to start. It doesn’t matter how much of an accomplished hiker or outdoor adventurer you are, something can go wrong very quickly and you will want that help to help you off the trail. You could slip and fall, have a sudden medical issue, get hurt by a wild animal or any number of problems could occur. So always have an itinerary, period.
For this person, I’m sorry, at least look at the messages to ensure that there wasn’t a real problem, like oh, I don’t know, maybe search and rescue was launched to look for you?
