Considering Military Veterans as Heroes
This question gets me all sorts of fired up. Let me take a minute to explain myself.
- What the hell does race or skin color have to do with this? This is likely a troll, based on the racial comments. Regardless, race has nothing to do with the military and veterans, or who likes and dislikes them. I can tell you from experience that the U.S. Military has a huge mix of races as well as genders. I’m a light green Marine (white skin tone), and I have worked with hundreds of dark green Marines (dark skin tones), and we referred to everyone as Marine and not black or white or light or dark green; they were simply Marines, because they earned that title.
- The lack of patriotism in today’s society is sad. I recall growing up and knowing the words to The Star-Spangled Banner, Glory Hallelujah (Battle Hymn of the Republic), America the Beautiful, This Land Is Your Land, God Bless America, and others. Today’s youth simply don’t know these songs even exist. There doesn’t seem to be much patriotism anymore, which is very sad.
If you follow this blog at all, then you already know that I’m a very proud Marine Corps veteran. I can honestly state that my brothers and sisters (those that I served with and trust with my very life) are from all colors, races, and ethnic backgrounds. Most everyone I served with was proud of what they were doing and what it took to get to where they are. We very rarely ever brought up race in our day-to-day tasks.
A comment like this is undoubtedly a troll who thinks this is funny on some level.
So for this very special ass hat, I’m going to slow down and clearly say everything using small words for this fuck stick, in the military we call this “Breaking It Down Barney Style“, which comes from the children’s character, you know the big purple dinosaur “Barney“. Since this fuck stick is so ignorant, I need to use small words so that they will understand!
Let’s just say that the U.S. Military doesn’t exist—let’s just say that it entirely disbanded—almost like it never even existed. Here are some things that you can expect.
Countless small men who are overcompensating and just happen to be dictators of their very own country will suddenly get the brilliant idea that they can attack the United States. I will use the king of little men, North Korea’s dictator Kim Jong Un himself. Now this little Oompa Loompa, who is around 5’8″ and 300 pounds, controls his country with a ton of foolish and harsh rules, things like.
- Foreign movies and songs are not authorized
- Making International calls is a crime, punishable by death
- Disloyalty to the leader can mean the death penalty
- Three-generation punishment
- Only government-approved haircuts are authorized
- Permission is needed to live in the national capital
- Students are required to pay for their own desks and chairs
- No Bible, as it is banned in North Korea
- No iPhones or laptops
- Strict customs rules
- Prison camps in North Korea
- Different calendar
- Only one leader to vote in the election
- Kim Il Sung is their only true leader
- No Marijuana law
- Insulting Kim and his family is considered blasphemy
- Not allowed to leave the country
- Strict rules for tourists
- Military service is compulsory
- Power cuts every night

These are just a few rules; some of the more interesting ones are #3, where you could make a straightforward screw-up, and you will be pulled aside and executed. And in North Korea, not only are you punished, but they punish in three generations (#4), which means that your child will be punished and their children will be punished for the crime that you committed. And these “crimes” could be as simple as not holding open the door for the supreme leader. It doesn’t take much. So now this little man and his 1.2 million-person military come knocking on your door, what do you do? You don’t have a gun, because, well, “guns kill people”. Your neighbors all follow the same thought process of “guns are evil,” so the North Korean military could instantly overrun the United States. Okay, maybe that is a little far-fetched (not really).
For those that don’t follow history, little men who have installed themselves as dictator have killed or murdered millions, all in the name of what they believe is right.
This infographic shows just a few such cases of little men dictators who have murdered for the “cause”. (see attached). Just China’s Mao Zedong, Adolf Hitler, and Joseph Stalin have murdered more than 74 million people, but we don’t need to worry about that happening here in the US, or do we? (source)
Let’s try a different angle
A category five hurricane hits the United States and devastates an entire state. It is terrible, no power, everything is destroyed, no food, no water, and thugs (who own guns) are taking over everything and leaving a trail of dead bodies in their wake. How does the United States regain control and give food and water to those needing it? They don’t because there is nothing like a national guard. So millions of people are affected by this storm. It takes many years for the local police (who have guns) to regain control, and then the community can slowly rebuild the area. This is why the U.S. Government has had to implement martial law to bring in the military to assist, as the local police forces are not equipped or trained for it.
Alright, that one is silly; it would never happen. Storms like that are fake news and manufactured by the government, blah, blah, blah. Hurricane Katrina in 2005 is fake news, and birds aren’t real. But wait. It just happened in 2024 in North Carolina after Tropical Storm Helene. And sadly, the U.S. Government and FEMA did very little, too late, to help.
Let’s try another possibility. A Mexican drug lord is moving his drugs into the United States. Since the border is controlled and patrolled, he decides to bring it in via a boat, since the waterways are not patrolled because there isn’t a Navy or Coast Guard. This drug load loads a barge with thousands of kilos of cocaine and other recreational drugs. The pilot of the barge pulls up to a dock and offloads the drugs, entirely unchecked. Yeah, yeah, I know, that could never happen, yet the water is still a favorite mode of trafficking drugs into the US. And without the Navy and Coast Guard, the boats, barges, and submarines would all go unchecked.
How about you and your family are on your yacht, enjoying your weekend? It is about 9 P.M., and suddenly your boat catches fire; you have no choice but to abandon ship. You and your family get off the boat safely, and you are all floating around the ship, with your life jackets on. So, you have several choices: float and hope that someone sees you and picks you up, swim home, or drown, because there is no U.S. Coast Guard available to respond to your distress call. I worked a dozen distress calls while stationed in Homestead, Florida, as a Marine in the 80s and early 90s. Let me assure you that all operations stop and focus on the rescue.
I know that is just silly, too. How about you and your family are taking a Disney cruise, and you are all having a great time. Suddenly, the Captain breaks the mood with an announcement, stating that the ship is currently under attack by pirates and requests all cruisers and employees return to their cabins and lock their doors. You laugh it off until you start to hear gunshots towards the back of the ship. You look over the edge and no shit, there are people climbing the side of the boat, trying to gain entrance. In a perfect world, the United States Navy would come and help U.S. Citizens out, but wait, the Navy doesn’t exist.
Now, back to your question itself. Because I and others like me raised our hands to support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, both foreign and domestic, you can open your mouth and spew hatred. You, by the way, are very welcome for what we do and did so you can have that freedom.
We don’t think or treat our veterans as heroes. However, we do often recognize what they did or are doing, meaning that we thank them for their service. We do this regardless of race, which you seem to want to segregate. A veteran gave up part of their life to help protect you and this country from threats both foreign and domestic. While you were smoking weed in a college dorm, they were in a desert keeping watch so those around them could rest. Maybe if you stop thinking about yourself and look at the bigger picture, you might see veterans and thank them for their service.
I’m so tired of people thinking that those in the military and those who served don’t deserve disability benefits from the Veterans Administration or those that bitch because a veterans gets a free donut on veterans day. I’m sorry, they have given up countless days and nights and weeks of their life and in some cases they even gave up their life, so stop your damn bitching about a freaking free donut or two.
We aren’t heroes, just men and women doing our job!

Welcome to the Average Joe Weekly blog. This is basically my place on the web where I can help spread some of the knowledge that I have accumulated over the years. I served 10+ years in the Marine Corps on Active Duty, but that was some 25 years ago.
