Commandant of the Marine Corps General Smith Is In The Hospital

Sergeant Major of the Marine Corps, Carlos A. Ruiz, stated that General Eric Smith experienced a medical emergency yesterday and is getting treatment at a hospital. The Corps highest-ranking officer, General Eric Smith (58) suffered an apparent heart attack Sunday evening.

According to witnesses, General Smith was running, then he started to walk down the street and stumble, before falling face-first on the sidewalk. A witness called 911 and started chest compressions. D.C. Fire and E.M.S. responded to reports of cardiac arrest in the vicinity of G Street and Seventh Street SE at 4:58 p.m. Sunday.

The ACMC position is currently vacant (soon to be filled by Lt General Christopher J. Mahoney, once his promotion to 4-stars is approved), due to the Senate blockage on promoting officers. With General Smith hospitalized, the service said in a statement that in accordance with federal law, Lt. Gen. Karsten S. Heckl, the senior officer assigned to Marine Corps headquarters, is performing the duties of commandant in the interim.
