First Black lesbian to serve in Congress
I’m looking at the headlines today, and I see “First Black lesbian to serve in Congress…“. The article is about Laphonza Butler, who is the first black lesbian to serve in Congress.
Now, I know nothing about Laphonza and I do hope that we are not electing people into office with their only claim to fame or their only qualification is that they are black lesbian. In fact, if I were her, I would be very pissed off about seeing headlines like this. Her skin tone and her choice of sexual partners should have nothing to do with her getting elected and shame on those that report it like that.
Laphonza Butler, who is going to replace Senator Dianne Feinstein in Congress, surely has other accomplishments beyond being gay.
According to ‘Harper’s Bazaar‘, her accomplishments are she is a black gay woman. According to ‘Them‘, her accomplishments are she is a black gay woman and will be the sole black one currently in the Senate.
Well, I don’t know you Ms. Butler, but here are some of the accomplishments that they should be reporting about, her being black and gay is not newsworthy in my book and certainly not an accomplishment:
- She is the president of the political action committee Emily’s List, which works to elect Democratic women
- Longtime senior advisor to Vice President Kamala Harris
- An advocate for women and girls, a second-generation fighter for working people
- She has led strategy efforts for Secretary of State Hillary Clinton
- Was president of California’s largest labor union, SEIU Local 2015, a union representing nursing home and home-care workers
- Former director of the Board of Governors of the LA branch of the Federal Reserve System
- University of California Board of Regents in 2018 and she served until 2021
- Has a bachelor of arts degree in political science from Jackson State University
- Mother of one
Ms. Butler, I will apologize on behalf of the MSM, which I am NOT a part of, but I feel that they are stating that you are nothing but a black lesbian.

Welcome to the Average Joe Weekly blog. This is basically my place on the web where I can help spread some of the knowledge that I have accumulated over the years. I served 10+ years in the Marine Corps on Active Duty, but that was some 25 years ago.
