Philmont Prep - May & June
May came and we had a trip to Pinefield Gap again in the Shenandoah National Park. This was actually one of my favorite trips, plus the only one we did on the Eastern side of the mountain. We parked one vehicle at Big Run Overlook and the other at Doyle Falls Overlook. We started at Doyle Falls Overlook and hiked along the Appalachian trail staying the night a short distance from the Pinefield Hut which was occupied by some thru-hikers and their dog. Then we continued on the nearly 10 miles to Big Run Overlook. This was to date our longest and most challenging hike.
My son and I also hiked this month several 5-6 miles treks in one of the local civil war battlefields.
June we did a 6.5-mile day hike from Jones Run and Doyles River loop again in the Shenandoah National Park. We only did a day hike as we had a troop camping trip to Natural Bridge that same month. Next month is Philmont.
Next month, PHILMONT!!!!!!!!!!!!

Welcome to the Average Joe Weekly blog. This is basically my place on the web where I can help spread some of the knowledge that I have accumulated over the years. I served 10+ years in the Marine Corps on Active Duty, but that was some 25 years ago.
