Check Your Photos

Innocent Photo
   Reading time 2

This is the third post in my Sharing Too Much Online series, this is on Checking Your Photos

So many people don’t check the background or foreground of a photo before they post it. I mean there are hundreds of humorous photos online of people who are honestly embarrassed because they didn’t check the photo first. One of my favorite examples is the real estate ad below, do you see it?

Do you see it

Do you see it

Do you see it?

How about now

How about now? In case you didn’t see it, look on top of the toilet. Now that is embarrassing.

Even a simple outdoor vacation photo might cause you problems. Do you see the issue in this photo?

Do you see what I see?

I see an address label, let’s zoom in and see what I can see

Let’s flip it around to make it easier to reach and maybe a little image enhancement won’t hurt either

Reverse image search revealed the source of the image as Smug-Mug

Now that I have more details, off to Facebook I go. Facebook is a treasure trove of information for many different searches. People just share way too much online.

A couple more databases and I will have all I need

Now that I have an address, let’s compare it to the label and it is a match

Now I can look up where she works

And even photos of the where she lives

The more I dig, the more I find. But for the purpose of this post, I have all the details that I need. All without paying a single dine (beyond my internet and electrical costs)

*** For the purpose of this blog post, I have blurred out some of the key data to protect the identity of the innocent. This section of the course I have never updated since I drafted it in 2005.  ***
